Your NZ Consumer Rights (CGA & FTA)
In New Zealand, your purchase is protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 (CGA) and the Fair Trading Act 1986 (FTA).
-
CGA: Goods must be of acceptable quality, fit for purpose, match their description, and be durable. If a product fails to meet a CGA guarantee, you may be entitled to a repair, replacement, or refund, depending on whether the failure is minor or substantial.
-
FTA: Prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct and false representations.
Nothing in this policy limits your rights under the CGA or FTA.
What We Cover
We take responsibility for original manufacturing defects and material defects present at the time of supply, under normal, intended use.
What’s Not Considered a Manufacturing Defect (Examples)
The examples below are generally not manufacturing or material defects. (If you believe your issue is a CGA failure, please contact us.)
-
Weathering & discolouration from leaving the tent erected outdoors for extended periods. Spartan Haus is designed to be taken down after use, dried, and stored indoors between sessions. Long-term exposure to sun, rain, wind, hail, or snow will cause expected wear and colour changes.
-
Small pin-holes on the roof from sparks or ash exiting the chimney. Considered normal wear; patching is possible if needed.
-
Wind damage incurred while using the tent in strong winds/gusts (e.g., winds exceeding ~35–40 km/h). Be especially cautious of sudden squalls.
-
Improper anchoring: Damage from failing to secure with tent stakes at each corner and guy lines + stakes at each wall, as instructed.
-
External pressure/leaning: Damage from leaning heavy objects—or people/animals—against the tent during firing. Excess pressure can push fabric into contact with the stove and cause damage.
-
Improper firing/fuel: Damage to the stove caused by incorrect fuel or firing technique. Use dry, seasoned hardwood (e.g., birch). Do not burn brushwood, paper, or debris that may spark and ignite surroundings.
-
Unstable placement: Damage where the stove was not placed on a stable, fire-safe base and tipped during use.
-
Salt water on the stove: Do not throw salt water on the stove—this can cause corrosion/rust.
-
Insufficient clearances: Heat damage from placing the stove closer than 20 cm to tent walls or accessories.
-
Normal wear and tear: Holes, scuffs, and tears that occur over time with regular use.
-
Thermal deformation: Warping from excessive firing/overheating. Minor deformation can be normal.
- Negligence, abnormal wear, incorrect washing/maintenance/drying, or use beyond the intended purpose.

Assessment & Remedies
Once we receive and assess the product, if we confirm a manufacturing/material defect, we’ll provide a remedy in line with the CGA and our policy:
-
Repair (e.g., patching, component replacement), or
-
Replacement, or
-
Refund (where appropriate under the CGA or where a substantial failure is established).
We’ll communicate the outcome and next steps promptly.
Limited 1-Year Manufacturer Warranty (in addition to CGA)
Spartan Haus provides a limited one-year manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal, intended use. We will repair or replace (at our discretion) any product or component found to be defective.
This warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, accident, unauthorised repair/modification, improper maintenance/installation/anchoring, environmental exposure beyond intended use, or normal wear and tear.
This manufacturer warranty is in addition to, not instead of, your rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
